Set over 17 magical days and jam packed with parties, performances and of course, the parade, Mardi Gras is the big gay Christmas that we all look forward to each and every year! …But, if this is your first #SydneyMardiGras, then you’re going to want to get it right, so listen up babes, and indulge in our tried and tested tips and tricks!

OUR TOP DO’S

1. Enter the JohnnIE Walker FIRST-MARDI GRAS Comp Now!

In celebration of those brave enough to be taking their first steps this year, Johnnie Walker is looking to unearth Mardi Gras first timers to go in the running for a chance to have an all-expenses paid trip to the first-ever Mardi Gras Debutante Ball by Johnnie Walker.

Winners will get the chance to make their grand debut at the ball, alongside Aussie icon Natalie Bassingthwaighte, who will also be having her own debut moment since coming out as queer last year.

Debutantes will be welcomed by Mardi Gras custodians including the legendary 78’er Robyn Kennedy, and surrounded by LGBTQIA+ community members, other first timers and celebrated trailblazers including TV personality Benja Harney and fashion design power duo Nicol-Ford.

Here’s how Mardi Gras first timers nationwide can enter in 3 easy steps –

1. Head to johnniewalker.com/en-au/mardi-gras-debutante-ball/

2. Share in 25 words or less why they would like to attend Mardi Gras in 2024 and what has stopped them from attending previously.

3. Get ready to make their grand debut at the 2024 Sydney Mardi Gras!

Hosted at the iconic Kinsela’s in Darlinghurst, the Mardi Gras Debutante Ball will be an inclusive and fabulous celebration of all queer identities, honouring the progress, strength and diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community.

NOTE: THIS COMPETITION IS FOR THOSE 18+ ONLY. GET THE FACTS AT DRINKWISE.ORG.

2. Good Vibes Only

Whether you’re going alone or with friends, make sure that you are ready to have a good time. Remember that this is an LGBTQIA+ celebration and everyone is welcome. Keep your mind open and embrace everything about this fabulous new experience!

3. Book Early!

You do not want to miss out on any of the exciting events taking place at this year’s Mardi Gras. The theme of ‘Our Future’ is encompassed in everything from drag shows, dance parties, talks and performances. Set yourself a budget (and stick to it babe!) and get booking, if you snooze you loose!

4. ALWAYS Fab (Fashion), NEVER DRAB

Ring, ring, ring;  its fashion calling! Yes, that’s right, this is your final call, your catwalk awaits and it’s your time to shine (bright like a diamond!).

But seriously, no matter your style, go big or go home bigger – add lashings of glitter, over-the-top out-there outfits (that you feel confident in!) and dramatic splashes of colour to stand out from the crowd. As Todrick Halls says: Nails, hair, hips, heels. A$$ fat, lips real. Purse full, big bills. B**ch, you’re a big deal.

OUR TOP DON’TS

1. Don’t Doubt Yourself

There are going to be so many people at Mardi Gras, that the only way to stand out will be with your golden personality. There’s no need to compromise the fun with fad diets and /or self conscious thoughts…this is your day and you’re gonna love it!

2. Don’t sweat the small stuff

Inevitably things will sell out and there will be event clashes but remember who you are with, and living in the moment is all that really matters!

3. Don’t FORGET YOUR FRIENDS ARE #1

Your friends are your (chosen) family – be there to support them on their big day(s), too. Safety in numbers. Make sure your friends are getting home alright. Tell them how hot they are 25/7.  Be THAT girl who supports, always.
