Adored Sydney bar and restaurant ‘Elm Rooftop’ deliver Australia’s latest, greatest, and to our knowledge, only Drag King Brunch, hosted by the ferociously fabulous Axl Rod.

It’s Axl Rod’s world, and we’re just living in it…well, that’s what you’ll be thinking after you check out Elm Rooftop Bar’s new monthly drag king bottomless brunch event, anyway!

It’s no secret that bottomless brunches are very ‘in vogue’ right now, and arguably, a little dime a dozen across Australia’s capital cities…that is, except for the fabulous new offering from Sydney favourite, Elm Rooftop Bar.

Yep, the adored Elm Rooftop Bar in Sydney’s east is redefining one of Sydneysiders’ favourite pastimes—the bottomless brunch—with the launch of what is believed to be the country’s first-and-only drag king bottomless brunch. With free-flowing prestige cuvée and rosé, good vibes, and delectable bites there’s no better excuse to round up your best Judys for an event that’s sure to be the bottomless alfresco affair of 2022.

Known for doing things a little bit differently, and in true Elm style, resident drag king Axl Rod will provide the laughs and entertainment, alongside a live saxophone player and DJ – camp right?!

Never ones to turn down a drink or few, the Modern Gay’s Guide team checked out the venue’s launch event, to ensure this article was 100% fact checked…and after getting 100% (RSA responsibly) white girl wasted, we can confirm, that this event, is in fact a massive vibe.

Drag King host, Axl Rod is equal parts sensational drag king, to comedic genius, and we’re currently obsessed. Their act is full of hilarious surprises and mass audience participation, which leaves the audience quite literally gagging for more (#Codpiece IYKYK).

Oh, and the food, talk about bou-jee….this certainly isn’t one of those bottomless brunches where the food is an afterthought, it’s luxe, it’s beauty, it’s delish.

And, arguably most importantly, the bottomless drinks are flowin’ – the team are absolutely onto it. We can surely all agree, that there’s literally nothing worse than a bottomless brunch where you spend 90% of the package aggressively staring at the waitress/waiter with an empty glass, trying to get their attention for a top up – the worst. Well fret less with this one, as the Elm Rooftop Bar team are like a little boozy pit crew, by your side, ready to top you up and keep you going.

…And as a full-time boozer, I couldn’t have loved that more.

If you’re alike my great grandfather, have lived under a rock and/or are sitting there thinking ‘what the bonkers is a drag king?!’, well honey, let me educate you…

Drag kings are mostly female or gender diverse performance artists who dress in masculine drag and personify male gender stereotypes as part of an individual or group routine….gosh that was very websters dictionary of me, wasn’t it?!

In layman’s terms, Drag Kings are the bad b**h gal (and gender diverse) pals who rock the masculine aesthetic, and comically mock male stereotypes and attributes.

“Queens have deservingly become almost mainstream, but the drag king scene remains underground and subversive, thus we’re stoked to be able to deliver this brunch to Sydney.” says Joshua Thorpe, Owner of The Taphouse and Elm Rooftop Bar.

“The kings that you’ll meet at Elm are epic, they explore gender and masculinity in such a humorous and unique way.”

Head Chef of The Taphouse, Nabin Luitel has curated the delicious food line-up that boasts the finest premium and local ingredients. Featuring freshly shucked Sydney rock oysters with a watermelon and champagne mignonette; refreshing watermelon gazpacho with a mint sugar rim and warmed sourdough with whipped lemon butter to start.

Moreish highlights include succulent soft shell crab banh mi served in a Japanese bread roll with pickled veg and sambal mayo and baked shakshuka with spinach and feta cheese, followed by the pièce de résistance, waffles and maple butter for dessert.
