Edited by Benjamin Law and written by many; Growing Up Queer in Australia (2019) is a bold collection of memoirs and stories – both affirming and emotional. If you’ve ever wanted to read a plethora of diverse, Aussie queer perspectives, this book is it.

Rebecca Shaw, a lesbian creative that offers her insight succinctly writes; “…I believe it doesn’t just get better, it gets ‘the best’. […] So do what I am still learning to do: be honest about what you want. Be open to loving and to being loved. You’re part of something special; get here as quick as you can.”

This read is perfect for baby gays looking to further understand the variety of our community within Australia, or a great start for family and friends of LGBTQ+ people needing to broaden their horizons. Even if you fall into neither of those categories, you will find a piece among this book that speaks to you.

You can pick this one up in most major bookstores, or give your local library a browse – you’ll be likely to find!

I chose this book of the month because I truly think it’s a fantastic queer read. The diversity of voices in this collaboration is everything A Modern Gay’s Guide is about – not to mention the fact it’s always a good idea to support indie media whenever possible (just like you’re doing right now!). It is a relatively short read which can be easily broken up by reading each piece at a time.
