As Vivid Sydney 2019 comes into its final hours, we’re coming in hot with your one-stop Gay’s Guide review of Vivid LIVE’s annual LGBTI+ event, Club Kooky. In order to give you the full gay 4-1-1 on the annual LGBTI+ event that is Club Kooky, we sent in two of our writers undercover to check it all out and give you the lowdown.
Making sure you’re 100% up to speed, Club Kooky is Vivid Sydney’s once a year LGBTI+ event, both inspired and immersed in queer performance art, freaky dancing and glittered sounds. Dressed head-to-toe in high-vis, 70’s inspired retro track suits, our writers were far from best dressed, but definitely not out of place. Club Kooky is a place where freedom proponents, meaning that dress codes are non-existent and anything goes – think everything from full LED eight-foot butterfly costumes, ensembles made solely from duct tape, the shortest of shorts and the highest of heels. It’s a costume event, where the sky really is the limit, with bigger certainly meaning better, and bolder being best.
This year, in a Club Kooky first, the event was an open-air celebration on the Sydney Opera House’s Northern Broadwalk, absolutely taking over the harbour with its iconic mix of LGBTIQ+ anthems and special guest performers. Sensational performances from the event’s incredible ‘secret performer lineup’ (including Electric Fields, the amaze Aboriginal Australian electronic music duo – #Yahs) had the crowd absolutely vibing…a big MOOD to say the least.

THE VERDICT
It’s an absolute heck YES from us. Between the crowd, the performances and the vibe, it really was a 10/10 LGBTI+ party that we did not want to come to an end. If you missed this year’s Club Kooky extravaganza, then keep your calendar free circa June 2020, and your eyes open for Club Kooky dates, come next year’s Vivid Sydney, as it’s an event that you’re definitely not going to want to miss!
